I am primarily an abstract painter who incorporates narrative and representational elements in my work. My paintings are inspired by travel, memory and place.

Often I start a canvas without a plan. I begin making marks, responding to marks previously made, choosing colors spontaneously, mixing them on my palette immediately before applying the paint. Shapes emerge; details suggest remembered experience and landscape.

I follow an impulse and work back and forth between letting the image happen and making choices that push it in the direction I want. I sometimes discover what the painting is about during the process.

Ultimately my emphasis ends in pattern and color, texture and shape, layers of paint and materials that culminate in canvases that depict places and experience remembered and re-imagined.
